Counting for Health

I’m going to go out on a limb here. I am going to suggest you stop counting calories, fat grams, servings, and points in whatever system you are using.

Stretching Theory

As a runner, sailor, surfer, and extreme-sports enthusiast, I value and promote proper stretching. As an informed student of human physiology, I cringe when I watch most people stretch. So many people stretch blatantly wrong that I wonder how they haven’t injured themselves yet. This week I address some basic stretching theory in the hopes of bettering your technique and approach. Mobile/Cell Phone Concerns

The verdict is out: we still don’t know how dangerous mobile phones are. After over ten years of availability, there is not a clear picture of the damage these devices may or may not be doing to our heads and our bodies. Think Low-Fat Diet? Think Again!

We’ve all heard that a low-fat diet is good for us. That’s old news. The real news is that total fat intake doesn’t correlate to heart disease and cancer (and all the other bad guys). Rather, what matters is trans fats and saturated fats. Simply avoiding those is one of the best things you can do for yourself. (more…)

Antibiotic Overuse

Since the advent of antibiotics, doctors have been prescribing them often for a variety of illnesses. For decades, this seemed prudent; after all, sick kids seemed to get healthy faster. However, now we understand antibiotics use has led to a very serious problem: antibiotic resistance. (more…)
