Finding Time for Exercise

We all know we should be exercising. Many people, however, don’t actually do it. Why? One of the common reasons is that they can’t find the time. This week I share some ideas for fitting a workout into even the busiest of days, and some alternative (more fun) ways of getting your exercise.

First, remember that any exercise is better than no exercise. Something as simple as a few pushups and situps in the morning or a walk during lunch daily can make a big difference over time. Park your car at the end of the lot instead of close to the door, or get off the bus a stop early. If you have a few extra minutes in a waiting room, do some stretching instead of reading the latest celebrity gossip.

Second, make it fun! Take up a new physical hobby, like dancing or rowing. Often the local community center will have weekly drop-in sporting events that you can play instead of watching TV. Games and sports are good for the body and the mind.

Third, decide that your health is more important than the inconvenience of scheduling exercise. Put yourself first when you figure out your plan for the day and the week. Start your week by figuring out when you’ll work out: then you won’t have to squeeze it in your schedule as an afterthought.

Make a habit of making the most of the time you have. Exercise doesn’t need to be a chore, it can be part of many of your daily activities. By keeping it lighthearted, you’re sure to keep it up!
