I remember when I was a kid (and into adolescence) that I would go on a long walk every spring. It was an annual fundraiser for a group I didn’t know very much about, I just enjoyed the challenge of walking 40 km (basically a marathon) in one day. By the end, I would be exhausted, but I also would have raised a hundred or more dollars to support a charity that helped people in need.
Now that I’m all grown up, I have learned more about the organization. Hope Cottages provides support and services to individuals with disabilities, and they are the only large group of their kind in Alaska. Because of the logistics in supporting people across an enormous, sparsely populated land, their operating costs are higher than other similar groups around the world. So they hold a fundraiser every year where people walk to raise awareness and funds.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of their annual fundraising walk. Since I will be back in Alaska during the event this year for the first time in two decades, I have decided to make the trek. While the distance has changed (it’s now a 5km walk), the intent remains the same: raise money to support disabled children and adults across Alaska. And my intent remains the same: to help them reach their goals.
Please sponsor me! Any and every dollar raised makes a difference in the life of someone with a disability. Won’t you please support me? Whether you pledge $10 or $1000, I appreciate your support.
